Safety Features

To deliver the best or nothing, safety must come first. It’s why Mercedes-Benz devotes so much time to a moment we hope never happens, and why every vehicle is engineered to make an accident less severe, less damaging, and even less likely.

Discover the many safety features available on every Mercedes-Benz vehicle below. Ask your Mercedes-Benz Manhattan Sales Rep for details on which features come standard and which are optional based on the vehicle you wish to purchase.

ACTIVE BRAKE ASSIST

Radar-based technology alerts you if you’re approaching a vehicle ahead, or even some stationary objects, at a speed and distance that suggest a collision is likely. As soon as the driver starts to brake, the system can automatically provide an appropriate level of braking to help prevent a collision or reduce its severity. If you fail to respond, the system can also initiate braking automatically from speeds up to 65 mph, and can activate the features of PRESAFE®.

COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS may not be sufficient to avoid an accident. It does not react to certain stationary or suddenly moving objects or pedestrians, may not react in certain situations where objects cannot be clearly identified, nor does it recognize or predict the curvature and/or lane layout of the road or every movement of vehicles and pedestrians ahead. It is the driver’s responsibility at all times to be attentive to traffic and road conditions, and to provide the steering, braking and other driving inputs necessary to retain control of the vehicle. Drivers are cautioned not to wait for the system’s alerts before braking, as that may not afford sufficient time and distance to brake safely. See Operator’s Manual for system operating speeds and additional information and warnings.

REAR CROSS-TRAFFIC ALERT

Using the sensors of Blind Spot Assist, this system can help audibly and visually alert the driver to approaching cross-traffic when backing out of a parking space at low speed. Especially helpful if your view is obstructed by vehicles or structures, the system can also apply the brakes. The sensors can also help detect if the driver has engaged the wrong gear or pedal for exiting a confined space.

Rear Cross-Traffic Alert is not a substitute for actively checking around the vehicle for any obstacles or people. It may not detect certain objects based on their size, path, proximity or speed and angle of approach, or due to sensor obstruction, and does not control steering angle. See Operator’s Manual for additional information, tips and warnings.

BLIND SPOT ASSIST WITH EXIT WARNING ASSIST

When traveling above approximately 20 mph, radar technology can help sense when a vehicle enters the blind-spot area. Blind Spot Assist can then alert the driver via an illuminated red icon in the appropriate side mirror. An audible warning sounds if the driver activates a turn signal while a vehicle is detected in the blind spot. After parking, Exit Warning Assist can alert the driver or passengers to vehicles, cyclists or pedestrians that could be at risk if the door is opened.

Blind Spot Assist is a warning system only, and may not be sufficient to avoid all accidents involving vehicles in your blind spot and does not estimate the speed of approaching vehicles. It should not be used as a substitute for driver awareness and checking of surrounding traffic conditions. Exit Warning Assist feature operates up to three minutes after vehicle is switched off, or until indicator in mirror flashes three times. See Operator’s Manual for system operating speeds and additional information and warnings.

PRESAFE®

A Mercedes-Benz first, PRESAFE® can detect instability during certain vehicle maneuvers that suggest a collision or rollover is imminent. It can then tighten the front seat belts, adjust the front passenger seat, and close the windows and sunroof, all in an effort to better prepare the occupants and restraints in the moments before a collision. If no accident occurs, the seat-belt tensioners reverse, and you simply readjust your seat, open the sunroof and continue on your way.

PRESAFE® closes the side windows when the system’s sensors detect side movements that suggest a possible rollover or side impact. A small gap is left near the fully closed position.

ATTENTION ASSIST®

The first system of its kind, ATTENTION ASSIST® continuously monitors up to 70 parameters of driving behavior, and can automatically alert the driver with both visual and audible warnings if it detects signs of drowsiness on long trips. With enhanced sensitivity, the system can also help detect drivers who begin their trip drowsy, and offer more useful information to drivers along their journey via a dashboard display.

Driving while drowsy or distracted is dangerous and must be avoided. ATTENTION ASSIST® may be insufficient to alert a fatigued or distracted driver of lane drift and cannot be relied on to avoid an accident or serious injury.

PARKTRONIC WITH ACTIVE PARKING ASSIST

As you drive by parking spaces, Active Parking Assist helps you size them up using sensors in the bumper. Once you decide to back into a space, it can expertly steer and brake the car for you. When it’s time to leave, it can even steer you back out. In any low-speed maneuver, PARKTRONIC sensors in the front and rear bumpers help detect nearby objects within its field of view. Audible signals and illuminated displays in the cabin help you navigate tight spaces with confidence.

Parking assistance systems are not substitutes for driver attention to the immediate surroundings, as well as any people, animals or vehicles in or approaching the vehicle’s maneuvering range. System cannot determine if a space is legally available or of a suitable surface for parking. See Operator’s Manual for additional information, tips and warnings.

REARVIEW CAMERA

Shift into Reverse, and a rear-mounted camera can display a live 180-degree view of what’s behind the vehicle on the screen atop the dashboard. Active on-screen guidelines indicate the car’s projected path as you turn the steering wheel.

Rearview camera does not audibly notify driver of nearby objects and is not a substitute for actively checking around the vehicle for any obstacles or people. Images displayed may be limited by camera field of view, weather, lighting conditions and the presence of dirt, ice or snow on the camera.

PRESAFE® SOUND

An important enhancement to the industry-first PRESAFE® system can help reduce the effects of a collision on occupants’ hearing. When the sensors of PRESAFE® detect an impending impact, a special “pink noise” tone is emitted via the audio system just before the collision. The tone’s frequency is tuned to induce a natural reflex within the human ear canal that helps shut out loud noises in advance of the actual impact.

Audio/multimedia system must be turned on for system to operate.

PRESAFE® IMPULSE SIDE

In a side collision, where the helpful effect of front and rear crumple zones cannot be applied, PRESAFE® Impulse Side is a pioneering system that helps provide a reduction in peak forces. When the system’s dedicated radar sensors detect an impending side impact, a chamber in the front-seat side bolster nearest the door rapidly inflates, to help move the occupant further from the door while also helping reduce the relative speed between the car’s side structure and occupant’s torso.

SEAT BELT TECHNOLOGY

Arguably our most important passive safety feature, all four outboard 3-point seat belts are equipped with Emergency Tensioning Devices (ETDs) and belt force limiters. If a collision exceeds a preset threshold, ETDs instantly remove slack from the seat belts. Belt force limiters allow a slight amount of give in the seat belts, to reduce the peak seat-belt forces on the occupant.

AIR BAGS

An advanced system of air bags offers 9-way occupant protection. Dual two-stage front air bags, combined thorax/pelvic bags for driver and front passenger, a driver’s knee air bag, and side curtain air bags for both seating rows are standard.

WARNING: The forces of a deploying air bag can cause serious or fatal injuries to a child under age 13. The safest seating position for your child is in the rear seat, belted into an appropriate properly installed child seat, or correctly wearing a seat belt if too large for a child seat. See operator’s manual for additional warnings and information on air bags, seat belts and child seats.

ADAPTIVE BRAKING TECHNOLOGY

Adaptive braking technology integrates a suite of advances. If you lift off the accelerator quickly, Predictive Brake Priming sets the pads closer to the discs for more immediate response when you apply the brakes. In the rain, Automatic Brake Drying periodically applies the brakes just enough to sweep water build-up from the discs. During uphill starts, Hill-Start Assist helps prevent unwanted rollback. And a HOLD feature can make long red lights or stopped traffic a little easier.

Braking effectiveness also depends on proper brake maintenance, and tire and road conditions. See Operator’s Manual for additional information and warnings.

ANTILOCK BRAKING SYSTEM (ABS)

The Antilock Braking System (ABS) senses impending wheel lockup under heavy braking, and pumps the front brakes individually or the rear brakes together up to 30 times per second. By preventing wheel lockup, ABS helps preserve the driver’s steering ability during hard braking.

Braking effectiveness also depends on proper brake maintenance, and tire and road conditions. See Operator’s Manual for additional information and warnings.

BRAKE ASSIST

Brake Assist (BAS®) senses emergency braking via the speed at which the driver presses the brake pedal and immediately applies maximum available power boost. Brake Assist can potentially reduce the overall stopping distance by eliminating the delay caused by a common human tendency not to brake hard enough, soon enough. Letting up on the brake pedal releases Brake Assist.

Braking effectiveness also depends on proper brake maintenance, and tire and road conditions. See Operator’s Manual for additional information and warnings.

ELECTRONIC STABILITY PROGRAM (ESP®)

This safety breakthrough first introduced by Mercedes-Benz continually monitors your driving inputs and the vehicle’s motion to help keep it going in your intended direction, especially in corners and during evasive maneuvers. If it detects wheelspin, severe understeer (plowing), or oversteer (fishtailing), ESP® can brake individual wheels and reduce engine power to help bring the vehicle under control.

No system, regardless of how advanced, can overcome the laws of physics or correct careless driving. Please always wear your seat belt. Performance is limited by available traction, which snow, ice and other conditions can affect. Always drive carefully, consistent with conditions. Best performance in snow is obtained with winter tires.

4-WHEEL ELECTRONIC TRACTION SYSTEM (4-ETS)

4MATIC® all-wheel drive incorporates our 4-wheel Electronic Traction System (4-ETS®), which monitors for the first sign of wheel slip and responds to ensure torque is sent to the wheels with the best grip, even if that’s only one wheel.

ACTIVE DISTANCE ASSIST DISTRONIC

A Mercedes-Benz innovation, Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC® cruise control uses radar-based technology to adapt your set speed in response to the flow of traffic ahead. If traffic slows down, it can reduce your speed automatically until your path clears. If the vehicle ahead slows to a stop, it can brake to a full halt. When traffic moves, you can resume with just a tap of the accelerator or cruise control lever, or it can resume automatically if the stop is under three seconds.

Available in Driver Assistance Package.

Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC is not a substitute for active driving involvement. It does not adapt cruising speed in response to stationary objects, nor does it predict the curvature and lane layout of the road ahead or the movement of vehicles ahead. Braking effectiveness also depends on proper brake maintenance, and tire and road conditions. See Operator’s Manual for system operating speeds and additional information and warnings.

ACTIVE STEERING ASSIST

Active Steering Assist can be engaged whenever you’re using DISTRONIC adaptive cruise control. Using cameras and other sensors to detect lane markings, guardrails and other vehicles, Active Steering Assist helps the driver keep the vehicle centered in its lane while cruising, even in gentle curves. When lane markings aren’t visible, it can even follow the vehicle ahead.

Available in Driver Assistance Package.

EVASIVE STEERING ASSIST

This breakthrough system can activate if you initiate an evasive maneuver while the vehicle’s sensors detect an impending risk of collision with a pedestrian in your path. The system provides a calculated steering force to assist you in executing the move, then can help ease the straightening of the vehicle in the adjacent lane after the maneuver.

Available in Driver Assistance Package.

No system, regardless of how advanced, can overcome the laws of physics or correct careless driving. Please always wear your seat belt. Driver’s deliberate steering inputs are required to initiate the system’s action, and can override its intervention at any time. See Operator’s Manual for system operating speeds and additional information and warnings.

CONGESTION EMERGENCY BRAKING

At many driving speeds, if the system detects a stationary vehicle in your vehicle’s path but deems there is no practical evasive route, it can brake to help avoid a collision or reduce its severity.

Available in Driver Assistance Package.

Drivers are cautioned not to wait for the system’s alerts before braking, as that may not afford sufficient time and distance to brake safely. Braking effectiveness also depends on proper brake maintenance, and tire and road conditions. See Operator’s Manual for system operating speeds and additional information and warnings.

ACTIVE EMERGENCY STOP ASSIST

While Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC® provides an extraordinary degree of driving ease when cruising, the driver must still remain able to intervene at any time. For this reason, if Active Steering Assist detects the driver’s hands off the steering wheel for a prolonged period, it can provide both visual and audible alerts. If the driver does not respond, DISTRONIC can reduce the cruising speed in stages, all the way to a stop, unless the driver resumes control of the vehicle.

Available in Driver Assistance Package.

It is the driver’s responsibility at all times to be attentive to traffic and road conditions, and to provide the steering, braking and other driving inputs necessary to retain control of the vehicle. Active Emergency Stop Assist may stop the vehicle in travel lanes and activate the hazard flashers if the driver does not respond to its alerts. See Operator’s Manual for system operating speeds and additional information and warnings.

EXTENDED RESTART IN STOP-AND-GO TRAFFIC

When using Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC® cruise control in stop-and-go traffic, the vehicle can normally resume automatically when traffic moves if the pause is less than three seconds. This innovative enhancement can help sense some traffic conditions that require longer pauses, and extend this interval to up to 30 seconds, to make driving in traffic easier and less stressful. If the pause is longer, the driver need only tap the resume button or accelerator pedal to proceed.

Available in Driver Assistance Package.

No system, regardless of how advanced, can overcome the laws of physics or correct careless driving. Please always wear your seat belt. Driver’s deliberate steering inputs will override the system’s intervention.

ACTIVE SPEED LIMIT ASSIST

Active Speed Limit Assist can detect posted speed-limit signs and, along with information in the navigation system’s map database, automatically adapt your cruising speed accordingly. As you first engage DISTRONIC on a drive, the system can also set your cruising speed to match the posted speed with just a single touch of the cruise-control “set” button.

Available in Driver Assistance Package.

Active Speed Limit Assist is not a substitute for driver awareness to posted speed limits and other conditions. Driver is responsible for safely operating vehicle in accordance with local traffic laws and driving conditions.

ACTIVE LANE CHANGE ASSIST

When cruising with DISTRONIC engaged, this innovation allows the driver to execute a lane change simply by activating a turn signal for a sufficient number of seconds. The system is designed to sense when you’re traveling on a multilane highway, and whether the area across the dashed lane marking is clear for a lane-change, then precisely steer into the adjacent lane.

Available in Driver Assistance Package.

Active Lane Change Assist is not a substitute for active driving involvement. It estimates but does not predict the curvature and lane layout of the road ahead or the movement of vehicles ahead. It is the driver’s responsibility at all times to be attentive to traffic and road conditions, and to provide the driving inputs necessary to retain control of the vehicle. System may not detect some objects, obstacles or vehicles in the area into which the vehicle would move. See Operator’s Manual for system operating speeds and additional information and warnings.

ROUTE-BASED SPEED ADAPTATION

MB Navigation and the advanced driver assistance suite collaborate to make using DISTRONIC cruise control even easier. Using the map database, the system can automatically slow down in anticipation of curves, traffic circles, even tollbooths and highway interchanges, then resume up to the posted speed limit afterwards. The system can also slow down automatically when you signal for a highway exit, to help prepare you for stopping the car as needed.

Available in Driver Assistance Package.

INTELLIGENT LIGHT SYSTEM HEADLAMPS

Pioneered by Mercedes-Benz, active LED headlamps generate light that’s perceived much like natural daylight. Active Curve Illumination and Adaptive Highbeam Assist continuously adjust the beam pattern of the LEDs in each headlamp to help maximize the illumination of corners and straightaways, without creating glare for other drivers.

Available in Driver Assistance Package.

ADAPTIVE HIGHBEAM ASSIST

Adaptive Highbeam Assist can automatically activate the high beams when camera technology detects there are no vehicles within range ahead of you.

Available in Exterior Lighting Package.

Adaptive Highbeam Assist is not a substitute for active driving involvement. Driver is responsible for adjusting the vehicle’s lighting to prevailing light, visibility, traffic and other conditions, and for adhering to local driving laws.

ACTIVE BLIND SPOT ASSIST

At most driving speeds, radar technology helps sense when a vehicle enters the blind-spot area on either side of you, and can alert you by illuminating an icon in the appropriate side mirror. A warning tone sounds and a display appears in the instrument cluster if you activate a turn signal while a vehicle is detected. And if you begin to change lanes, advanced active technology can help guide the car back by selectively braking individual wheels.

Available in Driver Assistance Package.

Active Blind Spot Assist may not be sufficient to avoid all accidents involving vehicles in your blind spot and cannot predict the movement of other vehicles. It should not be used as a substitute for driver awareness and checking of surrounding traffic conditions. See Operator’s Manual for system operating speeds and additional information and warnings.

ACTIVE LANE KEEPING ASSIST

With technology that monitors ordinary road markings at a wide range of driving speeds, Active Lane Keeping Assist helps detect unintended drifting off-course and alerts you by vibrating the steering wheel. If you continue to drift, it can selectively brake individual wheels to help guide the car back into its lane. Enhancements help it to detect and alert the driver to overtaking vehicles, vehicles you would need to overtake if you change lanes, and even oncoming traffic in the adjacent lane.

Available in Driver Assistance Package.

Driving while drowsy or distracted is dangerous and must be avoided. Active Lane Keeping Assist cannot be relied on to avoid an accident or serious injury. It may not be sufficient to detect a fatigued, distracted or inattentive driver, and cannot override the laws of physics. See Operator’s Manual for system operating speeds and additional information and warnings.

ACTIVE BRAKE ASSIST WITH CROSS-TRAFFIC FUNCTION

Active Brake Assist uses radar sensors to scan the road ahead at driving speeds up to approximately 45 mph. A Cross-Traffic function uses radar plus advanced cameras to help detect a potential collision with vehicles approaching from either side of an intersection ahead, or with pedestrians in the car’s path. When the driver responds to the system’s alert by braking, the system precisely applies the maximum brake force required to help prevent such an accident.

Available in Driver Assistance Package.

Braking effectiveness also depends on proper brake maintenance, and tire and road conditions. See Operator’s Manual for additional information and warnings.

SPEED LIMIT ASSIST

Using information from the navigation system’s database, Speed Limit Assist can display the published speed limit in the instrument cluster display or in the available Head-Up Display. This innovative system makes it easier to keep tabs on your driving speed, especially in reduced speed zones. Even if you pass a sign without noticing it, the persisting display help keep you aware of published speed limits.

Available in Multimedia Package.

Speed Limit Assist does not adjust vehicle speed, and is not a substitute for driver awareness to posted speed limits and other conditions. Driver is responsible for safely operating vehicle in accordance with local traffic laws and driving conditions.

SURROUND VIEW SYSTEM

The Surround View System uses cameras in all four directions to compose a single, live overhead view of your immediate surroundings. Displayed on the in-dash screen during low-speed maneuvers, it can help you avoid obstacles as you negotiate tight spaces, whether you’re moving forward or backing up. A special mode zooms in to help you line up your GLC and a trailer to attach it to the available hitch.

Surround View System does not audibly notify driver of nearby objects and is not a substitute for actively checking around the vehicle for any obstacles or people. Images displayed may be limited by camera field of view, weather, lighting conditions and the presence of dirt, ice or snow on the cameras.

PRESAFE® PLUS

An enhancement to the groundbreaking PRESAFE® system can help protect the occupants in a rear-end collision. A radar sensor in the rear bumper helps detect an impending impact, engaging the features of PRESAFE® to better prepare the front-seat occupants and their restraint systems. It can also firmly apply and hold the brakes, to help reduce peak loads on all occupants as well as the risk of a secondary collision.

Available in Driver Assistance Package.

System cannot prevent a collision, and does not alert the driver of an impending collision or system activation. It does not intervene if vehicle is backing up, and does not apply the brakes if the vehicle is moving or if Active Parking Assist is operating.

TRAILER STABILITY ASSIST

A trailer in tow can adversely affect the driving dynamics of a vehicle. That’s why the optional trailer hitch includes Trailer Stability Assist. The sensors for the Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) monitor for trailer sway, or oscillations, caused by the trailer’s movement. The system then intervenes by using the front brakes of your GLC to help stabilize the vehicle and trailer.

Read Operator’s Manual before towing. In some states, aftermarket trailer brakes are required. See dealer for details.
